How to get there by air

You must arrive at Chacalluta International Airport (ARI), which has direct flights from Santiago. From the terminal, rent a 4×4 vehicle or hire a tour. The salt flat is 170 km (4 hours) from Arica, a trip that requires a vehicle suitable for the highlands.

How to get there by land

From Arica, the journey to the salt flat is approximately four hours along routes 11-CH and A-235. It is a high mountain road with complex sections, so a 4×4 vehicle is essential. The best option is to take an organized tour.

At more than 4,200 meters high, acclimatization is essential: avoid intense efforts and stay well hydrated. Wear layered clothing and warm clothes for cold nights.
