Sanctuary of ancient trees

The Alerce Andino National Park, near Puerto Montt and declared a Biosphere Reserve, protects one of the oldest forests in Chile. It houses ancient specimens that are over 2,500 years old.

Two must-see trails are Correntoso and Laguna Sargazo, which take about three hours (round trip). On them, you can spot native fauna such as the pudú, the black woodpecker, and the monito del monte, a mammal considered a living fossil.
