Ceremonial village of the Birdman

Orongo crowns the edge of the Rano Kau volcano crater with one of the most dramatic views of Rapa Nui. This ceremonial village will transport you to the time of the Tangata Manu (Birdman), allowing you to visualize the real scenario of the risky competition to get the first egg of the manutara bird.

You will walk among elliptical stone houses that seem to blend into the landscape and look out towards the sacred islets in the sea. The site also holds an invaluable collection of petroglyphs: rock carvings that will tell you the legends and ancestral traditions as you walk the path along the edge of the cliff.
