Volcano that gave life to Rapa Nui
Rano Kau is one of the volcanoes that gave rise to Rapa Nui and a must-see stop on the island. Its enormous crater, more than a kilometer in diameter, contains a freshwater lake covered in totora reeds, creating a visually unique landscape.
The ceremonial village of Orongo is located on the edge of the cliff, a key site for local history. The Birdman (Tangata Manu) competition was held here, whose legends are engraved in petroglyphs, offering spectacular views of the crater and the ocean.

How to get there
How to get there by air
Access to Rapa Nui is exclusively by air. Fly to Mataveri International Airport (IPC) on a 5.5-hour journey from Santiago. Remember that to visit Rano Kau, which is part of the Rapa Nui National Park, it is mandatory to have a qualified local guide.
How to get there by land
From the capital, Hanga Roa, Rano Kau is only 6 km away, a journey of approximately 10 minutes by vehicle. Although the distance is short, remember that visits to this and all archaeological sites on the island must always be done with a guide authorized by the local authority.

The weather on the island can be variable, so it is important to wear comfortable layered clothing and complete sun protection, including a hat. Be sure to bring enough water to stay hydrated during hikes. Rano Kau is a sacred place; respect local rules, stay on the trails, and protect the heritage.
