Science and adventure in Antarctica
The Vernadsky Station and the O’Higgins Base allow you to discover human life on the frozen continent through organized visits. At the Ukrainian Vernadsky station, a museum tells the story of polar exploration and invites you to visit the famous Faraday Bar, the southernmost tavern in the world.
For its part, the O’Higgins Base stands out for being the first permanent Chilean enclave in Antarctica, founded in 1948. There you can visit the historic bust of the hero who watches over the peninsula and observe the colonies of gentoo penguins that inhabit the nearby islets.

The Antarctic access hub is Punta Arenas (Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport, PUQ). For “Air-Cruise” programs, you will take a 2-hour flight from PUQ to Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Aerodrome (TNM), on King George Island. There, you will board the expedition cruise to sail through the Antarctic Peninsula.
How to get there by land
The traditional route is 100% maritime, departing on an expedition cruise from the port of Punta Arenas. This option involves crossing the Drake Passage, a navigation that takes approximately 48 hours, before reaching the area of the Antarctic Peninsula where the bases are visited.
Must-Know Tips
It is essential that you plan your trip in advance. Since the O’Higgins Base is operated by the Chilean Army, it is necessary to coordinate the visit with the relevant authorities. Remember that, as it is a natural environment, you must take care of and respect the environment.
