Journey through the peaks of the Andes
The Seismiles (Six Thousanders) Route is a fascinating journey of approximately 530 kilometers through the Atacama Region, where more than 15 volcanoes and mountains rise above 6,000 meters in height. This sector, known for harboring the highest peaks of the Atacama Desert, includes the Ojos del Salado Volcano, the highest active volcano in the world, and other emblematic peaks such as the Tres Cruces Volcano and the Nevado Incahuasi.
This is a unique expedition into the heart of the Andes, where the imposing snow-capped peaks contrast majestically with the arid landscape. How to get there
How to get there by air
The nearest airport is the Desierto de Atacama Airport in Copiapó (CPO), with direct flights from Santiago. From the terminal, you must hire a tour operator or rent a 4×4 vehicle to start the route. Route 31-CH, the main access road, is 50 km from the air terminal.
How to get there by land
From Santiago, you must drive along Route 5 North to Copiapó (800 km, 10 hours), a trip that you should take in stages due to its duration. From Copiapó, take Route 31-CH to start the adventure. You should use a 4×4 vehicle and plan the ascent with caution, as the road reaches great heights.
Must-Know Tips
On the route, sufficient fuel, water, and food are required, as the distances are long and services are limited; calculate about 600 km of autonomy and carry extra gasoline. It is also necessary to hire guides, obtain permits, and be in good physical condition. Do not forget warm clothes, mountaineering equipment, and GPS devices for added safety.
