Chile has good telecommunications infrastructure that will allow you to stay connected for most of your trip. Here we explain your options.
Mobile Network and Coverage
Mobile network coverage (3G, 4G, and 5G) is excellent in major cities and towns. However, in remote rural areas, national parks, or in Patagonia, the signal may be intermittent. Plan ahead and download your maps before going to these areas.
Buying a SIM Card (Chip)
Acquiring a local prepaid SIM is easy and inexpensive. You will need to present your identity card or passport to purchase it.
- Where to buy: At phone stores in Santiago Airport (SCL), at operator branches in any city, large supermarkets, and shopping centers.
- Useful Tip: In Chile, the SIM card is commonly called a “chip.”
Public Wi-Fi
You will find free Wi-Fi in most hotels, hostels, cafes, and restaurants throughout the country. The speed and stability of the connection are usually very good in urban areas.
