2 days on a magical island of the Chilean Antarctic

2 DAYS

Located 2,400 kilometers from mainland Chile, Deception Island is one of the most remote, breathtaking, and extraordinary places on the planet. Its horseshoe shape reveals that you are actually sailing inside the caldera of an active volcano, where steaming beaches, hot springs, and Antarctic fauna coexist in a landscape that seems otherworldly. This two-day itinerary will take you through the most iconic points of the island, combining nature, history, and polar adventure.

Day 1

Volcanoes, history, and hot springs in Antarctica

The only way to access Deception Island is by Antarctic cruise. At dawn, the navigation reveals a horseshoe-shaped island: an active volcanic caldera, whose last major eruption occurred in 1970. Fumaroles, hot sands, and beaches that emit steam welcome you to this extreme and surprising landscape.

The landing takes place in Whalers Bay, a protected bay inside the crater. Here you can explore the remains of old whaling facilities and the old British research station, witnesses of human history in Antarctica.

After lunch on the ship, continue to Pendulum Cove, where you can live a unique experience: relax in hot springs in the middle of the white continent. Then, a hike to Mount Pond will take you to impressive panoramic views of the crater, the cliffs, and the volcanic environment.

As night falls, you will return to the cruise ship to rest with all the comforts and security necessary to continue exploring the next day.

Day 2

Antarctic fauna and navigation among volcanic landscapes

After an early breakfast, disembark at Telescopio Beach, an ideal spot to observe penguins, seals, and Antarctic birds in their natural environment. You can also explore Foster Bay, the heart of the island formed by the collapse of the caldera.

Later, you will sail through the famous Neptune’s Bellows, a dramatic strait that marks the official entrance to the volcanic caldera. Its steep walls and active geology make it one of the most impressive places on the island.

On the way back, make a stop at Hannah Point, one of the best places to observe gentoo penguins, elephant seals, and other species characteristic of the Antarctic ecosystem.
